When approached from a company that manufacture products for the aerospace industry, Fagima were asked if it was possible to supply a 5 axis CNC vertical machining centre that would be able to machine large components for aircraft wings to very high tolerance and also build into the machine the ability for checking components for machining accuracy that had been made on other machines.
Manufacturing a machine from scratch with strokes of 9 metres (x) 1 metre (y) and 0.8 metre (z), with working speeds up to 20 metres/minute plus fast feed speeds up to 50 metres/minute and a maximum spindle speed of 24000 RPM, could be classed as a major project for some companies, but Fagima were able to work to all the requirements against a specific delivery date that satisfied the customer’s needs.
By fully understanding the customers end goal for the project, the solution for Fagima was a simple one. In this case, the key to the flexibility required was to take a machine from Fagima’s standard range, Derby 4000 (photo) which is produced with forty HSK-63 tool change positions, and then extend the X axis from 4 metres to 9 metres without the need to modify either the Y or Z axes. Add in a Heidenhain Part probe and Renishaw Laser tool pre-setting unit and the machine is fully optimized for the end user. The guarding, which is also standard to the Derby range, is just lengthened to suit the longer X Axis of the machine ensuring all coolant and swarf is kept within the confines of the machine.
